Director of Construction and Facilities

The Director of Construction and Facilities is a key leadership role responsible for creating and overseeing the standards, programs, and initiatives centered on building and maintaining our restaurant portfolio. The position will establish construction best practices, processes, resource planning ,and management for scale. It will work closely with design, development, and asset management to simplify construction and increase asset resilience and uptime. This individual will lead a team of facilities managers to uphold our brand standards and ensure regulatory compliance. This role will work with Operations to build a strong partnership and collaborate with other support center departments to provide subject-matter expertise and represent the needs of our operators and guests.

Responsibilities: 

The position is responsible for delivering the pipeline build-out for our profitable restaurant expansion. Performance is defined as exceeding the store week's plan, improving the unit economics by driving down Capex and increasing ROIC, and improving the processes and tools that help us reduce build-out time and accelerate our growth. This position will also co-author the capital plan for the existing fleet by working closely with the asset management team and operations to develop the capital reinvestment plan that best supports our teams, our customers, and our assets. 

Manages maintenance and repair for all building systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, general maintenance, and sustainability. Ensure all facilities work follows our company standards, conforms to specifications, and that work orders are tracked and managed within the budgeted guidelines. 

  • Oversee the new store turnover process for scale, ensuring the team has a deep understanding of asset management and the ability to address unique issues that may impact facilities' upkeep on an ongoing basis
  • Build a resource allocation model, internally and externally, that unlocks rapid acceleration in new restaurant growth to protect and increase store weeks to plan
  • Develop a Capital plan for New Restaurant Openings + Reinvestment, delivering a high ROIC and strategically reducing overall buildout cost for our growth pipeline
  • Lead the Construction center of excellence to build scalable tools for expanding our general contractor and vendor network, contracting and onboarding new partners, bidding and estimating projects, and sequencing construction schedules to accelerate pipeline count
  • Develop a budget and strategies that optimize our repair and maintenance service to our restaurants, cost-effectively and efficiently, ensuring a positive guest experience
  • Manage preventative maintenance schedules for all restaurants, equipment, and systems
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations for all restaurant facilities
  • Drive continuous improvements for the organization by holding vendors accountable to established KPIs and actively consulting and training Operations teams on Facilities knowledge and ownership
  • Prepare capital allocation strategies to manage budgets associated with equipment replacement and remodels in partnership with Finance and Operations to Oversee Programmatic Equipment replacement projects executed by the Facilities Managers
  • Manage, coach, and develop a team of construction + facilities resources, and plan resource allocation for all projects and initiatives
  • Provide active insights and input into the functional design of facilities and the choice of equipment to the design and construction team, and influence decisions that are favorable for the long-term upkeep of assets

You are:

  • An exceptional executive in the space of Facilities Management with strategic and functional skills
  • Well-versed in Service Channel and its technology platforms to maximize its impact on R&M spend and trend analysis
  • A strong leader, cross-functional collaborator, and proven expert in execution/implementation
  • Able to travel 40-50% of the time

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of prior experience in development in a construction and/or facilities leadership capacity in a multi-unit environment, with emphasis on management in a restaurant environment
  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent in education and experience. Certification in the Restaurant Facilities Management Association, Facilities Management through the International Facilities Management Association, or other organization preferred
  • Financial acumen and understanding of budgets, project planning, and estimating
  • Strong technical knowledge of all aspects of restaurant facilities maintenance, including HVAC, refrigeration, food prep and production equipment, electrical, plumbing, and building systems and finishes
  • Strong communication + management skills, both for executive-level reviews and for instruction + education with operations, via head coaches and restaurant teams. 
  • Knowledgeable in governing codes, safety (OSHA) rules, sanitation (NSF), and building codes (BOCA)
  • Excellent consulting skills and ability to influence senior stakeholders to get things accomplished within a matrixed organization
